3Do you enjoy songs at concerts? Trying to remember the lyrics? Problems remembering songs for a performance? Help is needed?
Rano or later, a person who wants tothief vocalist, you have to deal with learning the words of the songs that he is going to perform. Do you think this is easy? Yes, maybe, but some people do not know where to start (or how), and some forget words at a crucial moment - for such and other people who need a little help and guidance, we have created this page.
Question: Do I need to learn words?
Answer: If you sing for your pleasure, then this is not necessary, but if you want to become a vocalist and perform on stage or succeed in a musical career, record your vocals - then studying the text that makes up the plot of the song is very important. Think about it. How would you feel if your favorite artist read the words from the sheet of his very famous and popular song? Yes, not very professional.
Question: What are the benefits of learning words?
Answer: To begin with, a well-learned text allows you to focus on singing, rather than trying to remember her words. Using a songbook or a sheet of text complicates the movement, suppresses emotionality and causes some excitement, even if it is not!
Question: I saw vocalists performing with a book on a stand - why can't I do that?
Answer: Of course you can. Although what you could see could be a list of songs or a music stand with notes for musicians and songs, they are listed in the order of their performance. If you find it difficult to learn words, and you need to refer to something on the stageWe have prepared some tips for you.
How do vocalists learn words
ATIt is important to understand that each has his own individual approach to learning — something that may suit one may not work for the other. There are several techniques that you can use to learn the lyrics of a song. Try each one of them and combine in one or several ways until you find one that works just for you. If you are more likely to perceive information visually, make yourself a hard copy and learn the text from it. Writing or printing lyrics several times also helps to remember the lyrics.
If you are better at listening to information, it is best to learn a song from a recording or practice with an accompanist. Listen to how the song is performed, and sing along with the performer, remembering the music of the song, which will help you remember the words.
If you are a kinesthetic (a person who perceives the world through sensations), find what you can imitate, practice! Touching and moving is the best way to learn words. Associate movements with a song, this can help present images. More repetitions may be required here, as people who use this method usually have difficulty remembering music.
The best ways to learn the lyrics are rehearsals and Mnemonics, another name for a memorizing instrument. Mnemonics is a way of remembering difficult to digest information. The principle of mnemonics is to use the best functions of your brain to better store information.
You can also learn songs written in foreign languages using this method. In the case when you listen to a song performed by an artist in your own dialect, the mnemonic method will also help you. This is a significant help if you want to correctly pronounce words and sentences and have a beautiful clear diction. Knowing the text will help the vocalist remember it faster and perform it more sensually.
Do not learn the text at the last moment! There are many points during the performance that can distract you. For example, if you are dancing or moving, it is very easy to forget the words of the song that you are performing! First, you should focus on repeating the text. The more you repeat, the better it becomes. Repeat until you bring the knowledge of the text to automatism. This way you insure yourself against a sudden hitch if you forget the text. Even if you are nervous or distracted by something during your performance, you will remember the song!
ATChoose a short phrase and say and sing it until you sing them, not paying attention to the music. Repeat what you learned with the second phrase, then combine them together and do the above actions with a new piece. Keep adding phrases and repeating all together until you can repeat the whole song. When you need to learn a large number of songs, start with the ones you like best!
Read and repeat words with short sentences - less and more often much more effective than trying to learn everything and spend a lot of time on it.
Make notes on the subject of the song and images.
Record your speech and your singing as you study the text.
Speak and sing to the rhythm of the song.
Record text on paper and record it while you repeat the words.
Link foreign words with those that you already know.
Learn words while playing a training audio track in the car or when doing extra work.
Learn the words in reverse order (the last verse first) and repeat them at different times throughout the day.
Repeat the song every day, sing or say the words out loud.
Use vibrant, funny, and exaggerated images or characters to help connect words.
Associate each word with an image, combining them to create such a journey through the song.
Memorize words without music, and only then combine them with music.
Try to hear a song and words while watching or listening to another song.
Your brain continues to work at night, so fluently repeat the text before you go to sleep.
If you have a training record, play it quietly when you fall asleep.
When learning harmony or backing vocals, record your part separately and record your part with other vocal parts. Then rehearse your part with other vocal parts.
Rehearse verses when doing some kind of repetitive work (for example, erasing).
Post copies of the song everywhere! In the car, bathroom, near the phone, and rehearse the words wherever possible.
Make sure that you always have a player and headphones with you, and wherever you go - listen to it on the bus, metro, during tea breaks and during lunch.
When you have successfully memorized the words and can sing them with your friends without peeping, praise yourself for doing such a job.
If you have already learned a song well, repeat it periodically so as not to forget and strengthen your memory.

Suppose you decide to perform a song in a language you don’t know at all. The first thing I will advise you to do is read text translation. Yes, it does not always accurately convey the original, especially in the case of opera arias and classical romances, but it will give you at least a rough understanding of what you are going to sing about. And sometimes, in modern music it sometimes happens that the melody is beautiful and the text is meaningless, and when you understand it, you will think: do you really want to sing this particular song.
It will also be great if you are at least a little get to know grammar new language: you can, for example, listen to a few podcasts for beginners or view the first lessons of a course. This will help you find more meaningful words in the text, and then, it’s just interesting - at least a little touch on the new language. Here you take a song in Norwegian, and with it learn a dozen basic phrases and you can say them. This is great! Can you imagine how proud you will be when you see the word that you met in these initial lessons in the song text? Believe me, such a situation is very possible, and in 90% of cases this is exactly what happens.
If you are even a little familiar with the language you decide to sing in, try translate the text yourself. Yes, you will need a dictionary, and the translation may take some time, but after such work it will be much easier for you to remember the text. And, of course, your vocabulary will also thank you, because it will replenish with new vocabulary, which you most likely will never forget. For example, I sing quite a lot of works in German and almost immediately I can say in which song I first met this or that word, and even remember a line with it. There are songs in which a grammatical structure is very common, and then the learned text will help you better understand it.
Pronunciation is, in my opinion, the main problem of Russian performers singing in a foreign language. I can’t listen to classical works performed by the vast majority of our young opera singers and vocal students, because no matter what language they sing, they have absolutely no knowledge of phonetics. And with the pop song, in principle, the same story - except that maybe the exception is English. With Italian, wherever it went, it is still easier, but with French and German in general it’s a disaster. There are special diction classes for these purposes in foreign conservatories, but we will probably not get to this soon enough.
I believe that in order to perform a foreign song it is necessary to have at least some pronunciation rules, so the next stage of our work is familiarity with the phonetics of language. You can say that Russian transcription exists on many popular song texts, but I do not recommend using it because it very much distorts the real sound. Of course, if you have a language with a non-standard alphabet, the official Latin transcription for it will help you - you do not need to learn Chinese characters for the sake of one song, this is too expensive. If you don’t want to immerse yourself in phonetics, you can try to imitate the artist by singing a song with him countless times. But I'm still for a more detailed study of the pronunciation.
I do not force you to take a complete phonetic course (although if you have the time and desire, you can do this too), but if you open some domestic textbook and pass at least the first few lessons in phonetics and get acquainted with the rules of reading, for the first time this will be enough. And most importantly - you yourself can read the text of the song you need. And if you want to continue to perform songs in your chosen language, phonetic skills can be improved. You can listen to the recordings of the speech of the carriers to get used to the sound of the language. When you study phonetic rules, look into the lyrics and look for examples on them - so you will quickly remember both the rules and the text.
Also note that most languages exist stage pronunciation - it is used when reading poetry, in singing or in the speech of actors in the theater. It is not much different from standard phonetic norms, but there are nuances that make it easier to sing: for example, the French grass r is not so easy to sing, especially on high notes, so when you play the classics it is replaced with our native Russian “p”, the same situation with German, in Chinese songs, tones are ignored, otherwise it would be impossible to sing. If you type “diction for singers“ or “pronunciation for singers“ in your YouTube search and write the language you are interested in before, you will see a fairly large number of videos on the vocal phonetics of this language.
I often have to adjust the pronunciation of students, and I can designate major mistakeswhich they allow when singing in different languages.
AT italian this is the absence of a difference between single and double consonants, as well as the softening of the consonants D and T before I.
AT German our guys like to turn Ö and Ü into Russian Ё and - - because it’s much easier to sing, it takes a long time to form a habit of not swallowing consonants in the endings of words and making a firm attack where possible.
French It is considered the most difficult to sing among the main languages, and here the main problems are the nasal vowels and E in the endings of words that we do not pronounce in colloquial speech, but in singing it turns into a special sound. In general, to correctly sing and pronounce all the French vowels, you need to spend a lot of time, but it's worth it.
When you more or less understand the phonetics of the language, you can go directly to the lyrics. I propose to divide the work with him into three stages:
1. Slowly reading the text - so that every sound is clearly audible (if the reading rules are still not firmly remembered, you can peek at them). This procedure is best done several times a day. If it is easier for you to learn from hearing, you can record your reading on the recorder and periodically listen to it, repeating what you heard.
2. We try pronounce the lyrics to the rhythm of the song, when we can read the text without hesitation. I think by this time her music will already sound in your head. You can listen to how texts are read in this way here: http://vocal-box.ucoz.ru/load/minusovki/10-5. Yes, there are classical arias, but I did not find such a resource for pop songs.
- If the pace of your song is slow, you can speak the text while listening to the original.
- If you have a fun and lively song, you need to learn how to pronounce words at a fast pace. To do this, try to read the text as a poem - it should already become almost native to you, because you read poetry in Russian calmly))
Here it is necessary to bring our foreign text to such a state. At some point, it will seem to you that singing is easier than reading a verse, and you will be right, but you need to get used to it.
3. After you have thoroughly worked with the text, attach the melody. First, sing the song to the original, because the performer’s voice will support you, and if you forget the words, it will tell you. When you are confident in your abilities, try to sing under the backing track. Just don’t worry if this doesn’t work out right away - you will need some time to get used to the accompaniment and the fact that no one else sings along with you, and all responsibility lies with you.
According to this scheme, you can work out the whole song at once, as well as each individual verse. If you want to see the result as soon as possible, first bring one verse to automatism, and when you can confidently sing it, go to the next. One verse will not take as much time and effort as the entire text.
If you study the text separately from the melody, it seems uninteresting to you, you can try to memorize both of them together, but this method will require much greater concentration from you. I would not recommend doing this if this is your first song in a foreign language. But if this is the foreign language that you know, such a method is quite suitable.
Now I would like to give some links to resources that can help you. They are especially useful for those who perform the academic repertoire.
www.lyrsense.com - there are lyrics of all genres in many languages, as well as quite decent translations into Russian.
http://dictionpolice.com/ - podcasts and articles on pronunciation in singing in different languages. Based on the texts of opera arias and romances, but after listening to them, you can get a good grasp on the basic principles and hedge against typical mistakes.
www.lieder.net - my dearly beloved archive of texts. Here you will not only be shown the text of the requested song, but also all the authors who have ever written music to it. There are translations into different languages, for example, from German to Italian or from French to Dutch. In general, for real language heroes this is what we need)
Ways to remember
The same information can be learned well in several ways. There are three ways to memorize the necessary material in a short time.
- The method of rational memorization,
It is based on the use of logical memory. In the process of rational memorization, the semantic and logical connection of the material with life experience is consolidated in consciousness. With rational memorization, an awareness of the read text occurs and information is more easily perceived. This method helps to memorize the material by heart, trains intellectual abilities and increases knowledge.
- The method of mnemotechnical memorization,
This is the most interesting of the three. It helps to remember non-semantic information, due to processing into images and associative connection. Mnemotechnical memorization is based on the experience gained, translating the text into images familiar to the mind. This method helps to remember a large amount of material that does not carry a semantic load. It can be dates, phone numbers, names, addresses. It helps to combat everyday forgetfulness, increasing the possibility of mechanically memorizing what is happening.
- The method of mechanical storage.
This method involves memorizing the material. It is considered ineffective and difficult to train, as it can fail at any time, "falling out" of memory. With age, the ability to memorize deteriorates.
Для быстрого усвоения текста используют разные методики запоминания. Один из самых эффективных метод вдумчивого чтения. Он хорошо подойдет для заучивания больших и маленьких объемов. This way is used by actors who, like no one else, need to know how to quickly memorize a text.
- First, we slowly and carefully read the text that you need to remember. Better read it out loud. When reading, you need to understand the main idea of the text, its main plot, so that you can remember faster.
- If the volume of the material is large, we break it into semantic parts. Each part must be learned separately, finding in them the most important words or phrases. This will help in the future, restore all text in order.
- After that, you need to rewrite the entire text manually. This should be done slowly, delving into the essence of what is written.
- After everything has been rewritten, we retell what we remember. It is necessary to recall the smallest details, relying on keywords. If you can’t remember a moment, it’s better not to peek at the notes, but try to do it yourself. You can peek only as a last resort.
- Next, we rewrite the second time only what we remembered without prompting.
- At the last stage, we carefully re-read the text again and retell. Better to do it before bedtime.
This method of memorization is suitable for learning the text verbatim. It will help students, school students and everyone who needs to know in a short time how to learn a large amount of information. In this way, theater and film actors use to remember their roles.
Tricks for quick memorization
There are a few simple but very effective tricks for memorizing the entire text, based on the nuances of our brain. To do this, you must:
- Highlight the main points in the text with a bright marker,
This will allow you not to be distracted by the extra part of the text. Actors thus highlight their phrases in the script.
This is a non-standard method of remembering. Having sung the material, it is better to plunge into the memory and it can be remembered faster.
- You need to read until the meaning is completely clear,
It is very important to feel the feelings and emotions on yourself, if this is fiction that the characters experience.
- After reading, you need to ask yourself questions about the content,
- Read aloud with an expression
- Write text with the other hand
If you're left-handed, write right; if you're right-handed, write left. This tricky way will cause the brain to spend more effort analyzing all the written material.
- Find a partner for training,
Actors rehearse in pairs, this helps in the work. You can also ask a friend to test you for knowledge of all the material. In the company, learning by heart is more interesting and much easier.
- Record the text on the recorder,
Record the text on the recording device and listen to it during the day, doing normal activities or during the trip. This will help to remember a voluminous text without being distracted from other matters and without wasting extra time.
Memory needs to be constantly trained. Storing information consists of encoding it and sending it to a special department of the brain for further storage. If information is needed, then it is easy to remember. When it is not used for a long time, the brain will remove it as unnecessary. Forgetfulness is inherent in man; this happens after a certain time. This is a natural mechanism of the brain and it helps not to overload the brain with unnecessary information and if it is not used, then it disappears from memory over time.
Everyone can learn a song, the only question is how? If one method is suitable for one, then for another it may seem archipresent.
There are a diverse number of ways and techniques to learn a song. At the first stage, you need to decide whether you have the most important thing - a musical ear. If you have absolute pitch, you are very lucky, because it is extremely rare. If not, there’s nothing to worry about, global inconvenience from this will not increase. Let's decide. We pass to the technique.
One way to learn a song by ear
Listen to the song from any source several times in a row and with the help of hearing and emotions you comprehend the melody and lyrics. Then listen a few more times along with the text. It can be a sounding song from the headphones during the trip or a serious lesson in the place with the accompanist. You can also connect an associative method of memorizing songs.
For those who remember well visually, you can try to learn the text by copying it by hand, or simply printing it out. Fix the sheet with the lyrics on the wall, on the refrigerator, in the most visited places ...
Kinesthetic perception can be a great help in learning a song. But here you yourself must find with what sensations it will be better, faster and better to memorize the text.
You can learn an English song or in another foreign language using the principle of "Mnemonics". If there is a possibility during the day to break away from the bustle of the world, take the text and teach in breaks.
If you want to learn a song in English, but you don’t know the language, write the song in Cyrillic. Quadruple and teach as described below in the instructions. Translate into Russian to sing not just memorized phrases and words, but try to convey the meaning and content.
You have the right to decide and choose what devices to use to learn a song,
but invariably one thing is rehearsal. And the more you study, rehearse, repeat, the faster you can learn a song.
Keep the whole image of the song as a whole, this will contribute to better memorization.
As for any other business, the song must be prepared in advance. You can’t just take it, learn the text in the evening, and perform the song the next day. This material will be “not sung”, not felt by the body and most importantly by the soul. Even the slightest excitement can interfere with the performer. Therefore, you need not just to learn a song, but to penetrate it, to give freedom to emotions and feelings during the performance.
How to learn text easily
Urgently need to remember the text? How easy is it to learn? Similar questions arise in the minds of people before the test, exam and other important events. Our brain has unlimited possibilities, only it should help in their development. At the moment, there are a sufficient number of techniques in the world aimed at the development of thinking and memory. It is worth noting that absolutely all mental processes can be improved throughout life. Being engaged in self-development, a person will be able to achieve a lot. We are used to seeing such successful people on TV, reading about them in magazines and on popular sites on the Internet.
The process that allows us to remember and forget information is called memory. She has her own volume, i.e. a person can only remember the maximum amount of information. But developing memory, over time, its storage can be significantly increased.
In order to understand exactly how much information a person can remember, they use special techniques to determine the resource of not only short-term, but also long-term memorization. Quickly memorizing large text realistically by following recommendations verified by many people.
Since childhood, a person develops a certain type of memory. For example, if he liked to read books on his own, then in the future it will be quite easy for him to remember information from paper and other media, that is, which can be read on his own. Thus, visual memory will be well developed. Consider another option for the development of memory. If in childhood parents read books at home, they have well-trained auditory memory.
How to learn text quickly and easily? In order for a person to quickly remember the flow of information from any source, he should regularly develop his memory, and cover absolutely all its types. In this matter, classes on various techniques will help, offering to regularly perform special exercises.
Methods and Tips for Developing Memory
The first thing to remember a text is to read it and understand what the author wanted to convey to the reader. Understanding what is mentioned in each paragraph, remembering it will be much easier than just a set of words. A sure way to remember is also to visualize what you have read, that is, to create a small movie in your head using images of the text. By correctly fulfilling all the conditions of the methods, you can quickly remember the work.
It has long been proven that it is easier for anyone to solve the problem in parts, this also applies to memorizing the text. To easily store information in memory, you should divide it into parts.
When studying the text, it is worth organizing a calm atmosphere around you. It is advisable to turn off the radio, TV and retire, because if someone nearby is talking on the phone, it is unlikely to be able to remember a theorem or poem.
After, the read text is recommended to be retold to someone. There is a statement that when you transfer information to another person, it is easier to remember, as well as understand it.
In some cases, it’s worth writing some words out of the work that you need to learn, you get something like a cheat sheet, and they, as has long been proven, are useful for learning. Records allow you to select the main information from the essay; visual writing works when writing. Also, reading a book, remember the font of the text, pictures on the pages.
If suddenly it seems that you are tired and the brain does not perceive the information, get distracted, drink coffee, relax, and then with renewed vigor begin to study, having previously remembered the text you have already learned. To memorize prose at home is much easier than in another setting, it takes less time.
Recommendations for memory training
In the world there are many methods and exercises for training memory, almost all of them are effective. Consider the most popular ones with many positive reviews.
- During any mathematical calculation, it is worth putting the calculator aside. Counting in the mind or on paper and doing this regularly, a person at times increases the amount of memory.
- Start your day with a score from 100 to 1. You need to count in this order and try to increase the speed every day.
- A sufficiently effective exercise is called "Cities in a minute." Performing it is simple: in just one minute you need to name 60 cities, one city per second. You won’t be able to do this the first time, but completing this task every day, after a week you can notice positive results.
- You can try learning new words. This technique will allow a person not only to train memory, but also to learn a foreign language. Such exercises should be performed regularly, since the picture will not change from once, as with muscle training. It is recommended to learn fifteen words a day and increase this barrier with each subsequent week.
- The simplest and most well-known exercise is the usual memorization of a poem. Important in this technique is its constancy, that is, you need to learn new verses systematically.
Fast reading improves memory
Very few people know how to quickly memorize a text. First of all, you need to master the technique of quick reading, it is she who will help in a short time to select the most important information from a large text or from a whole book.
Reading may be different:
- unhurried - it belongs to the reading of fiction (novels, detective stories, etc.),
- concentrated - required to study very important information,
- fast reading - with its help it is easy to select the main thing from the text of a large volume,
- fluent - the essence of the information without details is remembered.
Using the technique of quick reading, a person can easily highlight the basic information in the text and not waste his time on excess water in it.
In order to master the technique of quick reading, it is recommended to read the table of contents of the book from the beginning, this will help to build up a general impression of it. Then read the introduction, chapters, pay attention to the highlighted information in the text, on which the author focuses.
Train the speed of reading words per minute, each time take for exercise a new page from the book.
Mysterious memory features
Our memory, as mentioned earlier, has unlimited volumes. You can memorize the necessary and unnecessary information in various ways. Daily training your memory, you can discover a lot of new and unknown.
One of the most amazing methods of memorization is the phenomenon of eidetic memory. It is a process that allows you to record everything that happens in the environment. Symbols, words, images - all this cuts into memory in a second. The fact is that all information studied in this way is remembered as a code and reproduced at the right time for a person. Having such abilities, a person can easily memorize not only poems, but also large texts.
The main advantage of eidetic memory is that a person with it will be able to independently control what information he needs and which can be erased, like a computer.
Learning this technique of memorizing texts takes a lot of time, but absolutely anyone can learn it, the most important thing is not to give up and believe that everything will work out!
