If your garage door is difficult to open or it opens too quickly, you may need to adjust the torsion springs, which are part of the mechanism that allows you to open and close the door. Most torsion springs are installed along the central axis at the top of the garage door and pass under extreme stress to the collar or “cone”. Be sure to carefully read all instructions and warnings before starting this project.

How to twist a spring on a torsion gate

If you are interested in how to pull and secure the cable to a large garage door, for example, manufactured by Dorkhan, then you should understand that the entire torsion shaft is assembled in parts. So, here is a basic plan on how to adjust the torsion gate mechanism:

  1. Weaken the tension on the springs by lowering and fixing the structure.
  2. Unscrew the screw, which will give the drum mechanism free movement.
  3. Winding the cable.
  4. Screw the screw to its original position.

Many inexperienced workers wonder: why do the cables fly at the garage door? The answer to it lies precisely in the unstable operation of the entire mechanism and, in particular, the springs.

How to Adjust Automatic Garage Doors Yourself

We bring to your attention a useful article on adjusting the Automatic Garage Doors on your own and with your own hands. How to do this correctly, experts at MirStroyKomplekt will tell. Read the article and learn how to save money and energy with the help of acquired useful skills:

  • 1. Rules sectional door adjustment
  • 2. Drive adjustment gate dorkhan
  • 3. Spring adjustment sectional door

Adjustment of the lifting gate is carried out in several stages and can be carried out by hand, without the involvement of specialists. This will require:

  • Attentively follow instructions.
  • In advance prepare tools.
  • Follow all precautionary measures.

Adjustment of opening and closing of automatic sectional doors with the electric drive disconnected.

It is strictly forbidden to be under the canvas during work, as this threatens health and life.

Sectional Adjustment Rules

Adjustment of sectional doors Dorkhan (Doorhan) is independently carried out in several stages according to simple instructions:

  • Lowering the bladeand in the lowest position.
  • Fixing the bottom brackets to the wall (check that they are firmly locked because they hold a lot of weight).
  • Installing the keys on the gate section (the process should be carried out carefully to avoid damage to other components).
  • Drum fixing by tightening the set screw as much as possible.
  • Shaft rotation until the sag disappears (the main thing is to stop in time to avoid pulling).
  • For achievement total lack of sagging it is necessary to make 1-2 turns of the spring.
  • Screw tightening for final fixation.

However, sometimes it doesn’t work. adjust the tension of the sectional door cables in this way, and then another way should be sought. If you have any difficulties, you can carry out adjustment work in this way:

  • Unscrew the bolts.
  • Rotate shaft only on the side where sagging is observed (while fixing the position of the shaft on the other side).
  • Tighten the fixing bolts.

After that gates must fully restore their normal operation. Wherein parts wear is reduced, which is also important for construction owners.

Gate drive adjustment Dorkhan

Sometimes garage owners have problems with how to adjust the gates of Alutech, Doorhan, Came with an electric drive. In this situation, one of the key points is control setting, in particular - setting the final upper and lower position of the gate. You can do this this way:

  • Hold the P key to select a drive channel.
  • After the numbers appear one release the key, after which we press again.
  • We are waiting for number 1 will blink.
  • Using the “+” Button set the required upper level of the canvas.
  • Presses the P key to save the settings.
  • To adjust the lower level hold down the P key and wait for the number 2 to appear.
  • Using the “-” key lowers the canvas to the desired level.
  • By pressing P save the results.

Sectional door spring adjustment

The automatic gate springs are adjusted in several stages:

  • Loosening the fixing bolts.
  • The rotation of the spring 1-3 turns, depending on the situation.
  • Tightening bolts.

On the Internet You can find many tips on how to properly tension the spring on the sectional doors made by Dorkhan.

Adjustment of the mechanism of the lever gate can be carried out by improvised means.

The spring tension on the sectional doors must be checked regularly and adjusted if necessary.

Weight and dimensions of the gate.

Tension springs can lift much less weight than torsion bars. For example, the manufacturer of sectional doors Alutech, installs them on gates up to 7.9 m2, and only on household series. The door sizes available for ordering with them are shown in the figure below.

Torsion springs not only look impressive, but also able to work with any weight of the gate. The fact is that they are selected individually, based on the size of the gate, the weight of the canvas, the intensity of use. In the case of very heavy gates, a two-shaft balancing system is used. A chain with a tensioner is used to transmit torque between the shafts.

Scheme two-shaft balancing system for industrial doors.

Despite the more impressive appearance, the resource of work claimed by the Alutech plant, the torsion springs are the same as the tensile ones - 25,000 gate lifting / lowering cycles. In our experience, the gates installed five to seven years ago work as well as with torsion bars. True, this is true only if they are correctly installed, and used in a calm, "household" mode, 4-6 ups and downs per day.

The argument in favor of torsion springs will be the fact that only industrial doors are installed on industrial gates. “Wipes” and extension springs are not compatible. This indirectly indicates a smaller resource of the latter.

It is also optionally possible to increase the life of torsion springs up to 35, 50, 75 and 100 thousand cycles, but only for industrial doors.

The complexity of the settings.

Torsion is more difficult to install, they require pre-tensioning a certain number of revolutions. They are more demanding on the opening, for example, if the wall on which the gates are installed has a significant curvature, it will be difficult to coaxially install the shaft (and it consists of two parts). If this is not done, in the future, the cable may fly off the drums. But correctly configured, they work smoothly, quietly and for a long time.

The tensile springs in terms of opening requirements differ favorably. It’s easy to assemble them, they are less sensitive to the curvature of the opening, but they work noisily. However, this is a garage, not a conservatory.

Service.

Both torsion and tension require periodic monitoring, mainly over the condition of the cables, since a break in them is fraught with jamming or even falling of the web (if you are “lucky” and both cables break). During operation, the springs get tired and stop lifting the blade. In this case, the torsion can be tightened, and they will serve more. With tension springs this will not work, they will have to be replaced with new ones.

Security.

What dangers await the user of automatic gates? The first is a spring break at which the door leaf will fall. With a weight of 100 kg, it is not very nice. In this case, both the extension and the torsion bars have an answer. Above in the text we mentioned that there are not two, but four springs. So it is, each tension spring has an external inside, one more internal. If one breaks, the other will hedge. This mechanism is called “spring in spring”.

For torsion barriers, a ratchet clutch performs protection against breakage. In the event of a break, the stopper engages with the clutch and blocks the shaft, thereby locking the gate.

She is at the gate.

But what if the cable breaks? When one cable breaks, the canvas warps, and they hang in the opening. If the gate is with a ceiling drive, then the leaf hangs on its chain or belt. Is there special protection against cable breakage? Yes, but only for torsion bars, and only for industrial products. Tension springs have no devices for this case. The cable break protection is a spring-loaded steel knife, which, when the cable is loosened, cuts into the guide, thereby stopping the blade from falling. Once again, we note that it is installed only on the "waste".

Protection from cable breakage is somewhat reminiscent of a mousetrap.

Requirements for the opening.

The tension mechanism has one big advantage over torsion mechanisms. They need very little space above the opening for installation. Without a drive, only 100mm is needed, with a 125mm drive.

Gate layout with tension springs. Hmin = 100 or 125 mm.

Torsion mechanisms already require 210 mm above the opening, and if it is an industrial door, then as much as 410 mm, with standard installation.

Gate with torsion bars, standard installation. Hmin = 210mm (for household gates).

If there is not enough space above the aperture, and torsion gears need to be delivered before the cut, apply low installation when the shaft with springs is located behind, in the depth of the garage. In this case, the lintel (distance from the top of the opening to the ceiling. - approx. ed.) should be the same 100 and 125 mm, for manual and automatic lifting, respectively. But for this type of installation will have to fork out (+ 5% to the cost of the product).

Gates with torsion bars, low installation. Hmin = 100mm and 125mm (for household gates).

And now we come to the main point. Actually, the reason why the designers introduced tensile springs was the cheaper construction of the gate. This design is less metal-intensive compared to torsion bars, easier to manufacture, easier to install. Its application allows you to offer gates at more competitive prices. For example, the gates of Alutech, a Trend household appliance, 2500x2250mm in size, with torsion springs cost 34,700 rubles, but the same, but with tension mechanisms, are 1,700 rubles cheaper. At the same time, the resource declared by the manufacturer and the guarantee are the same. As the saying goes, the choice is yours! The specialists of GATE-GROUP.RF will help you choose the gate and the balancing system based on your individual requirements. Call, we are happy to help you!
